Each Skala pack says who it is for. These five groups follow the words on the packs.

The jar wall

Every Skala treatment cream, by hair type

25 one-kilo jars are in stock, from $5.76 to $14.99. Each tile takes the colour of its jar.

Jars for curly hair

Type 3 curls, from loose spirals to tight ringlets.

One jar, two jobs

Skala built its name on one shape: a wide jar holding a full kilo of treatment cream. Most jars are sold as a 2-in-1. You can work the cream through washed hair as a mask and rinse it out, or comb a small amount through damp hair and leave it in.

That double use is why a single jar lasts so long on a bathroom shelf, and why Skala buyers talk about price per wash day instead of price per bottle. A kilo is also heavy. The jar is made to stay by the shower, not to travel.

Jars for coily hair

Type 4 coils and tightly curled hair.

A colour for every line

Every Skala line has its own jar colour and its own character drawn on the front. Blue Mais Cachos is for curls, brown Mais Crespos is for coils and purple Mais Lisos is for straight hair. The names are Portuguese, and most of them say what the jar is for.

Once you know a handful of words, the shelf reads like a map. Children's lines swap the adult character for a child, and the fruit lines drop the character for a fruit pattern.

Jars for straight and wavy hair

Types 1 and 2, natural or straightened.

Plant oils on the label

Skala says its whole range has been vegan since 2018. On the jars you will see shea butter, castor oil, passion fruit oil, aloe vera and patauá, an oil pressed from the fruit of a Brazilian rainforest palm.

Most packs also state what is left out, usually parabens and silicones. A few do not, and one newer line lists parabens among its ingredients, so go by the pack in your hand.

Check the back label when an ingredient matters to you. The printed list has the final word, and it can change between batches.

Jars for kids

Children's lines, drawn with younger characters on the jar.

For smaller heads

Three Skala creams are for children: Mais Cachinhos, Mais Crespinhos and Divino Potinho. The jars are the same one-kilo size as the adult lines, with younger characters on the front.

A children's shampoo, conditioner and leave-in sit in the Crespinho Divino line.

Jars for any hair type

Fruit, vitamin and oil jars with no curl pattern on the label.

When the label names no curl

Some Skala jars are sold by ingredient, not by hair type. Bomba de Vitaminas, Potão do Amor and the fruit jars fall here. They suit a mixed household where one jar has to work for everybody.

Skala creams are rich and scented. If your hair is fine and goes flat under heavy products, start with a small amount as a rinse-out mask before you try any of them as a leave-in.

What Skala costs

Skala prices sit low for the size. A one-kilo jar runs from $5.76 to $14.99, and bottles start at $3.86. 34 products also sell in packs of two, three, four or six, and a pack usually lowers the price of each jar.

Everything in the Skala lineup is a cosmetic. These jars and bottles condition, detangle and style hair. None of them is sold here as a remedy for the scalp.

Buyers have left 35,622 ratings across this shelf of Skala hair care, and Mais Cachos 2-in-1 Treatment Cream leads the count with 14,420.

Prices move with the checkout of our retail partner. The pattern holds, though: the jar is the cheapest way to buy Skala by the ounce, and the kit is the cheapest way to try two bottles.

Label decoder

What the Portuguese names mean

Skala prints its line names in Portuguese on every jar sold in the US.

Beyond the jar

A Skala wash day can stay inside one line. The bigger collections add a shampoo and a conditioner in 325 ml bottles and a leave-in cream in a 250 g tube. Mais Cachos also has a styling jelly for curls.

Fruit lines such as watermelon, banana and grape pair their cream with a boxed shampoo and conditioner kit.

Bottles and tubes are easier to share and to pack than a jar, so they are the pieces of a line that travel. They cost less to try, too, which makes them a fair first test of a scent before a whole kilo.

The hair schedule Skala buyers follow

Brazilians call it the cronograma capilar. You rotate three kinds of mask over four weeks and watch how your hair responds.

Skala publishes sample plans for it. The schedule is a habit for your wash days, and it promises nothing medical.

What buyers write about Skala

Great for refreshing my curls, but I don’t like the smell

I like this product so far. I’m able to use it to refresh my curls, the product makes my hair wet enough to re-inspire my curl pattern. And then as it dries down it offers a light hold. I do not like the smell of this product it smells really artificial, but it fades pretty quickly.

Best hair product for my needs. This cream lays my natural hair flat. Better than other leave in conditioners that I have used in years. The amount of product you get for the price is so worth it.
